Fraternity Under Fire After Alleged Flyer

Posted: Updated:

A fraternity at Swarthmore University is coming under fire by fellow classmates for porn. They say recruitment flyers featuring picture of naked women took it too far.

Now some are calling for the college to cut its ties with frats.

Swarthmore College student Leah Gallant describes the controversial fraternity recruitment flyer causing a buzz on the campus.

"I would say the general sentiment is that people are really really angry about it," Jenny Lu, a sophomore at the university said.

The flyer in question was used to recruit and welcome new pledges for the Phi Psi fraternity, one of only 2 on campus frats.

"If you have something so blatantly misogynist is this really a space where women are really going to be safe," Gallant said.

The frat flap has now sparked a movement on campus to ask college to stop funding fraternities at the private liberal arts college. These flyers are popping up around campus saying what phi psi did was sexism.

" I think fraternities kind of foster this kind of attitude," Lu said.

But some say fraternities do play an important social role on campus.

"Definitely not a dominating social force the way there are at some other colleges but definitely present so not something that can be counted out," senior Erik Tvetenstran said.

No one answered when we went to the phi psi house for a comment.

In a statement Swarthmore College officials said, "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the fraternity's use of totally inappropriate imagery, and it will stop now"

But it's still unclear if the college has handed down any disciplinary action against the fraternity.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
