A birthday card is usually a welcome surprise in the mail, but what was inside one card in the mailbox of an elderly couple's Phoenix home was a lot more of a surprise than they would ever want.
An elderly couple in Phoenix was in for quite a surprise when they received a birthday card in their mailbox. The card was originally being sent from Phoenix to Pennsylvania, but the address was fake, so the card was delivered back to the return address that was listed on the envelope.
"I'm not even sure or not if it was in fact their birthday, but they received this card in the mail and as a gift they received methamphetamine," said Sergeant Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department.
That's right, methamphetamine, about a thousand dollars' worth, was mailed to the home an 81-year-old man and his 73-year-old wife in a North Valley neighborhood.
They opened the card that had their return address on it and found inside a plastic baggy containing a white powdery substance.
They called 911.
"We actually had our bomb squad respond to this location, just out of an abundance of caution. We weren't sure what this was initially," Martos said. "Upon further investigation it was determined that this substance was methamphetamine that was sent in the mail to this elderly couple."
Phoenix Police Sergeant Steve Martos says that it's not uncommon for drug transactions to take place using the United States Postal Service. It's likely whoever did this was using the couple's home as a drop location, hoping that the person whom the meth was meant for would get to the card before the homeowners did.
