No Fun Allowed During Recess

Posted: Updated:

I remember when I was in middle school we were banned from wearing flip flops. The concern was we might slip, fall and cut our feet. It seemed crazy at the time, but little did I know crazier things would be banned at schools down the line.

Ready for the latest bright idea from a middle school in Long Island New York?

Weber Middle School in Port Washington is banning certain activities during recess to make sure kids don't get hurt. You see too many students were getting injured during recess. So what's the solution? Naturally to ban footballs, baseballs, lacrosse balls - pretty much anything and everything that might hurt someone on school property. Seems logical doesn't it? While they're at it, maybe they should ban reading because kids might strain their eyes (as one of my facebook commentators suggested) or pens and pencils in case kids accidentally hurt themselves.

Imagine telling kids to forget the football, and bring out the Nerf ball instead. Did I also mention cartwheels and rough games like tag are banned, unless someone is out there supervising the kids?

I think most will agree this is absolutely ridiculous.

Let's read between the lines here, this all comes down to liability and lawsuits- plain and simple. It's sad but true, we live in a sue happy society. These days, people and institutions get sued right and left, and apparently that leads to ludicrous ideas like this one.

Granted just one middle school is doing this (that we know of at least) but who is to say this wont set a precedent for others to follow. What if school districts jump on the bandwagon?

Why can't kids just be kids? Let them play in the dirt... sure they maybe fall, scrape a knee, maybe bleed a little, but so what? You can't try to control and protect their every move.

The school says they want to make sure kids have fun, but are protected at the same time. Sure... at this rate....why not just wrap them in bubble wrap and have them sit still?

Twins brothers with a YouTube channel filled with their pranks say they weren't trying to make a joke. Serious intentions or not, a park full of parents were not amused by their latest stunt. This video is a must-see!

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
