Postgame handshakes banned throughout Kentucky high schools

A sports tradition is coming to an end in Kentucky.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association on Tuesday ordered all high schools to no longer conduct postgame handshakes due to an increase in violence during the postgame events.

The KHSAA cited more than two dozen phyical confrontations over the past three years that helped lead to the decision.

The KHSAA will not administer the rule's enforcement, instead leaving it up to the schools. Opposing teams can choose to ignore the order and have a postgame handshake as long as coaches supervise and report any incidents that occur.

Unsportsmanlike acts that occur following games would result in a fines against athletic programs and possibly participating individuals.

KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said, "You're on notice, if you're going to do this, you're going to be accountable."
