'Open Carry Day' at Michigan's capitol building

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

School kids touring the state capitol building today shared the space with gun owners participating in an annual event called 'Open Carry Day.'

"I open carry to say 'Hey, look, we're out here. We have guns. We are good guys. We're not a threat to you.' There is no reason to panic when you see one," gun owner Jake Enen tells Fox 2's Tim Skubick.

But one lawmaker says when the weapons started showing up in office his staff became nervous.

"Well, you have somebody walk in with a shotgun and full-battle fatigues and an ammo belt, you'd be nervous, too," State Representative Harold Haugh argues.

A tourist group from Livonia, not expecting to see so many guns, shared their opinions with Skubick saying they were also nervous about having so many weapons inside the building.

One tourist tells Skubick: "I'm a pro-second-amendment person but I think it really served no good," says Ivan Scott.

Yet others weren't phased.

"I completely feel safe today. There's no issue," State Senator Joe Hune says.

A gun owner from West Bloomfield Dan Meadows says he wants the right to protect his family, especially in gun-free zones, where he says only the bad guys have weapons. "All they do is they disarm people like us who just want to be prepared to defend ourselves or our family within these gun-free zones," Meadows says.

Seven school groups were scheduled to come tour the capitol Wednesday, but when notified that it was 'Open Carry Day', three of those groups stayed home.
