First Storm Soaks Southland, Closes 5 Freeway

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11 / CNS) A deluge of water and mud, likely caused by a clogged storm drain, flowed onto the Golden State (5) Freeway in Sun Valley today, shutting down both sides of the freeway and snarling traffic for miles.

The flooding was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. near the Roscoe Boulevard ramps of the Golden State Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. Storm runoff appeared to have overloaded a drain near a freeway overpass, sending water, mud and debris cascading onto the freeway.

Traffic initially managed to squeeze by on the inside lanes of the freeway, but eventually the mudslide covered all northbound lanes and left southbound traffic inching along by the center divider. About an hour later, the southbound side of the freeway was also closed.

With the freeway closed between Glenoaks and Sunland boulevards, traffic backed up for miles in both directions.

One vehicle became stuck in the mud on the northbound side of the freeway, but the driver was able to safely get out of the car, which was eventually towed out of the mud.

Shortly after 5 p.m., two southbound lanes were reopened, while Caltrans crews worked to clear mud and water from the rest of the roadway.

All lanes in both directions were reopened by about 10 p.m., according to the CHP.

From Gigi Graciette:

A shoe.

A plastic bag marked "BIOHAZARD" with William Gxxxxx's medical specimen in it.

Enough plastic bags to supply a small city's market for a year.

Another shoe.

A beer bottle.

98 more beer bottles. Not on the wall.

Needles; not for sewing.

A bottle of Thunderbird Wine. Used.

The above is a real but only partial list of things spotted in and around the storm basin that overflowed yesterday and caused that muddy mess on the 5 freeway in Sunland. It's no wonder it overflowed!

Cal Trans tells me the area near the drain is a popular hangout for transients so that may explain the assorted collection of trash that built up to the point where the drain was covered and when yesterday's storm moved in, the trash moved out, taking with it the hillside, overflowed onto the freeway and the rest is Sig Alert history.

Gosh, that's a long sentence but I digress.

Back to the business of garbage, a lot which I also saw on the side of the freeway, obviously thrown there from passing cars.

Really? That plastic bag was bothering you so much you couldn't wait till you got to a real trash can so you decided to use everyone's freeway as your personal litter box?

Sigh.

Oh, and by the way if you see William Gxxxxx, remind him that he left his medical-specimen-thingy by the freeway. He really ought to see a doctor about that.

From Christina Gonzalez:

Traffic flowed smoothly tonight on the I-5 at Glenoaks in Sun Valley.  That wasn't the case earlier today when a backed up debris basin overflowed onto the freeway.

The rain came down so hard, the debris opened up a four-foot wide gash on the side of the northbound 5. That turned the overpass into a waterfall, with several cars getting stuck.

The backup was several miles long, as both sides were closed for hours to clean up the mess.

Dozens of people caught in the mess got out of their cars and walked to a near-by gas station  on foot to use a tiny bathroom at the Arco station.

"I don't have words for it" said one attendant, "it's overwhelming!" He was referring to the rain which came down hard during the evening rush hour.

No injuries were reported.  Work crews say all  the lanes should be cleared by the morning rush hour.  Tonight, there may be closures as trucks loaded with dirt leave the area.
