Storm damaged NJ bird sanctuary

LONG HILL, N.J. (AP) - Storms packing strong winds that barreled through New Jersey on Monday caused more damage to a center that rehabilitates wild birds than Superstorm Sandy.

Tree limbs fell, destroying or damaging cages at the Raptor Trust in Long Hill.

Associate director Chris Soucy tells The Daily Record of Parsippany the storm caused an estimated $75,000 in damage. He says that compares to $50,000 caused by Sandy in which insurance covered little more than half.

The birds have been moved to temporary smaller cages.

The Raptor Trust says about 20 cages are used to rehabilitate birds back into the wild. About 75 birds that are too injured to ever release back into the wild occupy another 30 to 40 cages.
