Family Adopts Ukrainian Child With Down Syndrome

When the Wojcik family of Raleigh, North Carolina first decided to adopt, they never knew just how much their new child would change their lives.

They adopted little Milana, who is now six years old and has Down Syndrome. She was living in a Ukrainian orphanage, where children with the disorder don't survive unless they are adopted.

Back in North Carolina, another family living just a few blocks away from the Wojciks were in the same process. 

The Fergusons adopted Nadia, who also has Down Syndrome. The two little girls instantly became best friends.

Milana's mother, Jennifer Wojcik says, "She probably would be dead. She probably would have gone to a mental institution at four. An adult mental institution where she probably would have been strapped to a bed all day, maybe she would have had one diaper change. They might have fed her once. Nobody would hold her or talk to her."

Milana's father, Chris Wojcik, adds, "She's not biologically ours, but she's ours. And she's amazing."

Three years after adopting Milana, the Wojcik family says that she opened their hearts so much that they are planning to adopt two more kids with Down syndrome.
