Eagles Game Still Scheduled Despite Bucs MRSA Cases

Posted: Updated:

It's the third case of MRSA on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers team.

In August, both kicker Lawrence Tynes and guard Carl Nicks were diagnosed with it. The team hasn't revealed the name of the player in the most recent case, but Fox Sports Insider Alex Marvez says its rookie cornerback Jonathan Banks.

"We can actually definitely say the first two cases were not related to each other," said Dr. Deverick Anderson of the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network.

The disease shows up as red skin lesions that ooze, Dr. Mike Cirigliano of the University of Pennsylvania treats patients with it regularly. The bacteria spreads from person to person through open wounds.

"What happens is you have these football players playing against each other, rubbing up against each other. And if one of them has the infection they can spread it," he said.

The locker room, he says could be a breeding ground, with the sharing of towels or razors.

The Bucs players have received training about the infection since the first case. Their facility has been cleaned twice. However, Dr. Mike says in his opinion, he wouldn't go forward with the game.

"I know there's a lot on the line for these games, In my opinion the best thing to do is forget about it," he said.

At this point, the game between the Bucs and the Eagles is still set to go on as scheduled.
