NEW YORK (AP) - New York City's most famous house is on the verge of becoming a home again.

Gracie Mansion, the 214-year-old building that is the official residence of the city's mayor, has sat vacant for the last 12 years after Michael Bloomberg elected to live in his luxurious Upper East Side town house.

Although he never spent a night there, Bloomberg poured millions into renovating the Manhattan mansion. The major candidates vying to replace him, including Democrat Bill de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota, have indicated they would likely move into the Federal-style home.

The home has been used to host city functions and has been open for tours. The executive director of the conservancy that cares for it says it's a historic home "where history is still made."
