Evergreen Park mayor on surviving West Nile Virus: I`m lucky to be alive

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Summer may be gone, but one of its mainstays lingers this October: West Nile Virus. Evergreen Park Mayor Jim Sexton has a warning for you: If you aren't careful, you may regret it.

The mayor contracted the virus in August of 2012. He spent weeks in a coma at Advocate Christ Hospital and even received his last rites from a Catholic Priest.

Sexton lost 65 lbs. during the ordeal. The long road to recovery includes hours of physical therapy, since West Nile wreaks havoc on the nerves and spine.

With a bent neck, he still bares the effects today. But he thinks he's the luckiest guy in the world, to have survived West Nile.
