Haunted New York

Posted: Updated:

Within the foundation of this old city, trapped inside some of its most historic buildings, is a history of hauntings and ghostly tales.

Dozens have gathered for a ghoulish tour checking in on the phantom of Gay Street. The winding West Village street is among many locations in the city known for frightening fables.

Greg Young is a writer with the Bowery Boys, a group that has documented Manhattan's restless spirits. Like Midtown's Belasco Theatre where the owner supposedly never left. He says that some actors say they still smell a ghostly scent of cigar.

Sometimes ghost stories in Manhattan are literally right beneath our feet. Like at Washington Square Park, which was once a hanging ground during the American Revolution. It is estimated some 15,000 bodies are still buried here.

The Merchant's House Museum on East 4th Street was built in 1832. Inside and out the Tredwell home has been preserved. Board member Anthony Bellov says the former occupants may still be present.

The Ear Inn on Spring Street is one of the oldest taverns in the city. It's also where manager Gary says his own relatives were spooked by what some say is the spirit of a sailor said to haunt this historic site.

This old city has 8 million stories, many belonging to the dead.
