Trip To Walmart May Have Saved Girl's Life

Posted: Updated:
WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. -

A trip to Walmart turns into a potentially life-saving moment for a little girl.

It's a moment both she and her mom will never forget, FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reports.

She's a star student and a die-hard sixth-grade softball player who has her heart set on a bright future.

"She is going to fulfill her passion of softball. She wants to be a dentist," said her mother, Stefanie Lindner.

But it's a vision 12-year-old Carly Lindner, of Williamstown, was close to losing sight of.

"I was seeing blurry vision and stuff, like blue dots," Carly said.

It wasn't normal, so Carly's mom took her otherwise healthy daughter for a routine eye exam at Walmart Vision Center.

What came next shocked and terrified this family.

"He said, 'Worst-case scenario, it's a brain tumor,'" Stefanie Lindner recalled.

Dr. Nazmul Hasan, of Walmart's Vision Center, found that Carly's optic nerve was severely swollen.

Her mom says she was admitted to a local hospital where specialized doctors, fortunately, ruled out a brain tumor but found that Carly had excess fluid surrounding her brain. If left untreated, she could have gone blind or lost her life.

"Thank God we found it early," Hasan said.

Hasan and others say it's unclear why Carly developed this condition.

"That's why it's, you know, important too for people to come in every year or two for an eye exam because, even if you don't have any symptoms – she had very mild symptoms – there can be something very serious going on."

Stefanie Lindner said, "It was scary. Yeah, she was scared."

But now Carly is saying a big "thank you" to Hasan for recognizing a red flag, sending her for emergency treatment and, ultimately, saving her life.

Both mom and daughter are counting their blessings.

"I am forever grateful for what he did as a physician," Stefanie Lindner said.

And they're hoping their story urges adults and children to get recommended, annual eye exams.

"They could have the same thing I could had, and I wouldn't want them to lose their vision like I almost did," Carly said.
