NEW YORK (AP) - New York state's attorney general said that apartment hosts on the global rental website Airbnb are responsible for tens of millions of dollars in unpaid taxes.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has subpoenaed the California-based company to turn over data on about 15,000 New York City residents who have listed apartments and rooms on the site.
Schneiderman spokesman Matt Mittenthal said Wednesday the documents would show exactly how much money the state has lost. He says he wants to make sure Airbnb hosts follow "the same rules as everyone else" - paying almost 15 percent in taxes in New York City.
Airbnb executive Nick Papas said they want to help New York collect the taxes, but called the request for personal data on thousands of New York hosts "overbroad."
