Hundreds Of Thousands Expected To Feast At The Taste Of Soul In LA

Posted: Updated:

There is nothing quite like  the "Taste of Soul" anywhere else in the country, perhaps not even the world. Which would explain why every year for the last eight years, hundreds of thousands of people have poured onto Crenshaw Boulevard to frolic and feed at this phenomenal festival, widely regarded as LA's largest street fair. Unless you suffer from Agoraphobia (fear of open spaces or crowds) or a similar disorder, I can almost guarantee you a good time at this unique event.

I challenge you to name another gathering where you can find more than 200 vendors with some of the best soul food on the planet along with Grammy award-winning entertainment, in one place for one day for free admission.

Last year, "Taste of Soul" attracted more than a quarter of a million people. Quite a huge jump from the 50,000 who attended the first festival in 2005. And even that was impressive.

"Taste of Soul" is the brainchild of Danny Bakewell Sr., publisher of the Los Angeles Sentinel, the nation's largest African-American newspaper. Bakewell says he wanted to establish an event that would foster "self determination and empowerment" in the Crenshaw area; an opportunity for the community to come together to "do something great for itself." According to Black Enterprise Magazine, Los Angeles is home to the largest number of black businesses in the country, many of which will be represented in one form or another at the festival.

KTTV FOX 11 is one of the proud sponsors of "Taste of Soul" and most of us who are on the air, including myself, will be there to represent the station. But even if it weren't a station sponsored event I would go. It's absolutely awesome and a great way to spend the day. "Taste of Soul" is tomorrow, October 19 from 10AM-7PM. Crenshaw Boulevard between Stocker Street and Rodeo Road is the location. My advice is take public transportation or get there early to find a good parking space.
