OAKLAND, Calif. (AP/KTTV) - Commuters in the San Francisco Bay Area say they're frustrated by the second transit strike in four months.

Unions representing train operators, ticket takers and other workers went out on strike overnight against BART, the largest transit system in Northern California.

Waiting for a ferry in Oakland, commuter Mary Nelson said strikers are "holding a lot of hardworking people hostage."

People were lined up well before 5 a.m. at a BART station in Walnut Creek for one of the charter buses BART was running into San Francisco. And traffic at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll plaza into San Francisco was backed up for miles.

The strike came after a marathon negotiating session with the participation of federal mediators. BART employees walked off the job for four days in July.
