PHOENIX -

The women of rock, from the 30s to today, have their own exhibit. This history is right in front of you.

It's hard not to say "wow" out loud, walking through this exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum.

"It looks at the roles that women have played, in the contribution they have made to popular music all the way through today," says Dr. Cullen Strawn, curator.

Lady Gaga's meat dress is on display.

It's gone through a process by a taxidermist, it made it look like beef jerky, and painted to its original color.

70 top women singers are on display showing their favorite outfits and a history of their career.

"It all really started with Billie Holiday, Billie Holiday was a big influence on rock and roll. She was one of our greatest jazz singers there was no one else like her."

She loved wearing a fox fur stole, a sign of her success.

The curator admires Joan Jett.

"She started playing in The Runaways when she was 15 years old, after she left, hard to find a job. She was edgy and playing power chords on a guitar."

Joan Jett did alright. After being rejected by 23 record companies, she started her own company.

There's a story behind every woman rocker. The exhibit goes through May 20th.

It's at the Musical Instrument Museum off Tatum and 101.

You can spend hours walking the museum.
