Crime suppression sweep targets outstanding warrants

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The sheriff is at it again. Just two weeks after a federal judge ordered major changes for his department, Sheriff Arpaio ordered his deputies to conduct a crime suppression sweep through parts of southwest Phoenix.

This is the 21st crime sweep since 2008 -- but it's the first in quite some time.

The sheriff's department is focusing on a 4-mile radius centered in southwest Phoenix. From Camelback Road down to the Salt River, and between Litchfield Road and 43rd Ave.

Despite the judge's ruling, the sheriff told us he's not going to back down, and today's sweep is certainly an indication of that. They're going after guns, gangs and drugs.

Earlier this summer, the judge found that sheriff's deputies had engaged in racial profiling. But the sheriff says this was actually planned before the judge's decree came down. It's in response to the murder of one of his detention officers, Jorge Vargas, who was shot and killed in August.

"This is not an immigration operation. I want to make sure of that over and over again," said Arpaio. "They killed my officer. 27 years old, shot him, assassinated him, and he was in uniform. You don't do that!"
