Verrado High loses contest, but video star gets special prize

BUCKEYE, Ariz. -

Students at Verrado High School in Buckeye made a video for Katy Perry. They had hoped their version of "Roar" would win them a chance to host Katy Perry for a concert at their school.

Friday, Perry announced the winner and it was not the kids from Verrado. But after she announced the winning school, Perry made a special announcement about the student featured in the Verrado High video.

The high school may not have won the grand prize, but everyone there tells me they are still coming out winners.

Megan Squire is the teenager starring in the video, and her story about overcoming obstacles touched so many people that Katy Perry wants to meet Megan. She's asked Megan to be her date at a special event.

It's the roar echoing across the nation. The star of Verrado High School's music video, 18-year-old Megan Squire, doing what she loves -- cheering.

"It's really important to me it's my life," she told FOX 10.

The video captures what Megan had to do to get on the cheer squad. It became a finalist in the national competition to win a private Katy Perry concert. Verrado High didn't win, but the singer still had a message for Megan.

"I want to bring Megan to a special event this fall with me as my date, her and her friends, an event where I'm singing. I know which one it is, it's going to very exciting, I just want to celebrate her and hear her roar in person. I love you, I love your spirit, you have really inspired me," Perry said on a national morning show Friday.

The other students who worked on the video say the chance to touch people with Megan's story is prize enough.

"Even though Megan has Down syndrome she's letting herself out and doing whatever she wants to do and not letting it stop her," says classmate Kiersten Buckhannon.

"I'm feeling really happy," says Megan.

Happy she'll be meeting Katy Perry -- happy she's now a homecoming princess -- but most importantly for Megan she's thrilled its football season.

"Because we get to cheer, because we get to cheer."

Because no matter what the challenge, this cheerleader will roar.

Megan tells me there is one song she definitely wants to hear Katy Perry to sing in person -- you guessed it -- Roar.
