Internet dating triples over last 5 years, study says

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

More people are turning to their smartphones and computers for companionship these days. They're using them to find dates, and snoop on exes.

Internet dating has tripled over the last five years, according to a Pew Research Center study. More people are using dating sites and at least a quarter of internet users admit they research past flames and potential dates.

About 11% of Americans have used dating websites or apps, up from 3% just 5 years ago.

About 2% of Americans say they know someone who uses dating websites. Many say they know someone who met their spouse that way.

Snooping is also on the rise – 38% of those on the market say they have also Googled their ex.

And Facebook is being used more to catch up on old mates, to see what they're up to.

One person on the dating scene says websites are a replacement for the single scenes at bars.

He says he watches out for scams and people who misrepresent themselves on the internet. And his personal observation is that right now is the season for coupling, because people in Chicago don't want to be alone when it's cold out.
