CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An 84-year-old woman was struck and killed by a driver in north suburban Glenview Tuesday morning.

Ulla Sjoholm was a short distance from her home when she was struck by a westbound car in the 8700 block of Golf Road about 6:30 a.m., authorities said.

Sjoholm, of the 2500 block of West Golf Road, was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge about 6:52 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Sjoholm tried to cross busy Golf Road in the middle of traffic rather than walking to an intersection crosswalk, said Cook County Sheriff Spokesman Ben Breit. The westbound driver was not cited.

The woman was a resident of Talisman Village. "She was a delightful woman and we are all very saddened and devastated by this," said Carrie Polales, building general manager at Talisman Village.
