Battle Of The Paddle

Posted: Updated:

Go to the beach, lake, river or any large body of water and you'll most likely find a number of people paddling on large boards. Stand-up paddle boarding or SUP'n  started in Hawaii a little more than ten years ago and it has been rapidly growing worldwide. I was introduced to this red-hot water sport a couple of years ago. Since then, I've purchased two beautiful boards and I love hitting the lake any chance I get.  For me, it's all about the peace and relaxation that comes with gliding on the water. Since I'm not a great swimmer, I prefer flat water.  But for those who are and like a little more excitement, SUP'n in the ocean is the way to go. The swells make it tougher to stay on the board and they give you an amazing workout.

If you want even more of a challenge, you can always enter a SUP race.  It seems like every month there is some kind of SUP competition somewhere on the planet.

Battle Of The Paddle or BOP in Dana Point is one of the most popular SUP races in the country.  Hundreds of people showed up to compete in the 6th annual BOP.  What's it like?  I would describe it as insanely challenging!!

Take a look at the video (above) so you can see for yourself.  Photographer David Honl captured the fun and craziness of: Battle Of The Paddle.
