LA Area Teenager Arrested For School Threat Tweet

Posted: Updated:

There's an old saying, "watch what you say." These days we should add to that admonition, watch what you tweet as well because it can get you into a heap of trouble. No one knows that better than a 17 year old girl in Lawndale who is now under arrest on suspicion of felony criminal threats because of a tweet she sent out.

Here's what she tweeted: "#ThoughtsDuringSchool should I shoot up the school? What if I accidentally shoot someone I like? Pffft I hate everyone what am I talking about"

The school the teenager is referring to is Lawndale High School. And whether she was just being silly or serious, this girl, whose name is not being released because of her age, is now in a whole lot of hot water. As well she should be. LA County deputy sheriffs took the girl into custody and booked her into Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. They also searched her home but no weapons were found. Additionally, deputies were deployed to the high school to make sure everyone there was safe.

Some of the teen's friends insist she's kind of a snarky person who was probably just joking. That may be. But with the Sandy Hook School tragedy and other mass school shootings still fresh in the national psyche, law enforcement simply cannot afford to take any chances. Every threat like this that comes to the attention of authorities has to be taken seriously.

But what happened shortly after this particular teenager was arrested is perhaps even more disturbing. To show their support, several of her fellow students also sent out threatening tweets. Not smart. Even though authorities believe these are just copycat tweeters, they've made it clear these teens could be held accountable as well.

I'm not sure what it will take to make kids who do things like this understand the seriousness of their actions. But arresting them and making their lives very uncomfortable for a while is probably a good place to start.
