Boy battling cancer receives birthday gift from stranger

ATLANTA -

A total stranger helped brighten the day of a local boy battling brain cancer.

Bernice Hicks saw FOX 5's story on Thursday about JaKorey Moore, a second-grade whose wish was to be home for his 8th birthday. Hicks was so touched by Moore that she decided to give him a special gift.

"I'm from a family that cares about people," Hicks said. "I heard him say the most important thing: he wanted to go home with his sisters and brothers, friends and teacher. And I saw he loves school."

Hicks blessed JaKorey with a birthday card and a bag full of goodies, including a Nintendo 2DS, an Iron Man comforter and a check for $500.

"You're Iron Man all the way through," Hicks said. "You cannot be broken so remember that, okay? You're going to get through this."

Moore's mother, Markeya, was teary-eyed by the generosity.

"It is so touching to know somebody that doesn't even know us is touched by us. I never in a million years thought we could touch people," she said.

Hicks said she's now a well-paid government contractor, but said she remembers being a struggling single mother like Markeya.

JaKorey is motivated to conquer cancer.

"I am blessed. I can't be broken," he said.

Doctors removed a golf ball-sized tumor from JaKorey's head back in March. He is now going through radiation and chemotherapy.
