ATLANTA -

At only 33, Scott Schoenthal is fighting cancer for the third time.  With a family to support, things would be much worse if not for the help of loved ones and people he's never met-- and it's all thanks to a creative fundraising method that many people in similar situations are turning to.

His wife Misty says when she married Scott, she got the best of both worlds.  He can build, cook, clean and even landscape.  And while you might not know it, the father of two has been through a lot.  With a weakened immune system, Scott has survived two bouts with cancer.  So, when had blood in a cough that wouldn't go away, they had some kind of idea what it was.

Misty says doctors did a chest x-ray and asked them to come back the same day because they didn't want to deliver the news by phone.  She says based on that, they knew it was bad.  Scott had testicular cancer.

Despite the bad news, Misty says she's found a way to be strong.  She also says Scott was one of the breadwinners of their family, and while they're not feeling the financial effects yet, they know it's coming.

But Scott and Misty's support systems have come through in a big way.  They've done it using an increasingly popular avenue of fundraising called crowdfunding.  It's a way of getting services, ideas or soliciting contributions from a large group of people online.  Scott's sister-in-law, Andrea, started a fund for the family's medical expenses, and the response has been overwhelming.

So far, they've raised just shy of their $41,000 goal on www.gofundme.com.  And, it's happened in less than two weeks. They say they're shocked by the generosity of family, friends and even strangers.  It's been a show of love that has taken some of the pressure off of a family that's already feeling the weight of a terrible disease.

So far, Scott's story has been shared more than 1,600 times.  To make a donation, click here to visit his GoFundMe.com page.
