At first, employees at the LA county waste treatment
facility thought it had to be a bad Halloween joke. The upper torso of a woman
was found in one of the settling tanks where the waste goes after it's
separated into liquids and solids. But, it was no prank.
LA Sheriff investigators confirmed these are human
remains, possibly a Hispanic female, adding that the body parts match the lower
part of a body found this weekend at the San Jose Creek water reclamation plant
Authorities are treating this as a homicide. They believe the body was disposed of through
a manhole cover, but most likely all in one piece. Coroner investigators
speculate that it could have been dismembered when it went through the centrifuge
that separates liquids from solids, sending some of the remains to Carson.
"It's still very preliminary," says Lt. Mike
Hosson, from Sheriff's homicide. The body had to come in through a large sewer
line, somewhere between the 605 in the east, to the La Verne/San Dimas border,
and south from the 60 freeway.
Anyone with information on a missing female, most likely
from the San Gabriel Valley area, should call homicide att 323-890-5500.
