LA Area Hot Sauce Plant In Hot Water For Causing A Stink

Posted: Updated:

The city of Irwindale says Sriracha hot sauce stinks. Not so much the product itself but the plant where the popular condiment is made. The spicy sauce is easily identified by the rooster on the bottle. But area residents are certainly not crowing about Sriracha these days. In fact, quite the opposite. The city has slapped Huy Fong Foods with a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that a foul odor emanating from its plant where the hot sauce is produced is a public nuisance.

How bad is it? Well nearby residents have been complaining of burning eyes, irritated throats and headaches. And some people claim the stench is so bad, they've actually been forced from their homes. One family even protested that it had to move a party indoors after the overwhelming smell became too strong to take.

Initially the manufacturer and the city were in negotiations to resolve the situation but those talks broke down after company representatives claimed the odor didn't exist and that plant workers have never complained. The city, located about 20 miles east of downtown LA, is seeking closure of the plant until the owners submit a plan to address the smell. So far there has been no further comment from the company on the matter.

Sriracha hot sauce is extremely popular and can be found in restaurants all around the world.  In fact the company held its first Sriracha festival in downtown LA recently that attracted hundreds of fans. The current plant has been in Irwindale less than a year. The worst of the smell is apparently seasonal, usually between September and December when the chili needed to make the sauce is processed.
