Drone/UAV flying: Is it legal? Is it safe?

Drones just aren't for the U.S. Air Force, the Border Patrol, or the CIA anymore. The technology is now available for everyone. Most hobby stores sell them starting for around $500 up through a few thousand dollars. But is it safe or legal for just anyone to buy a drone and just start flying it with no instruction or training?

Golf is a big industry in the valley. There are courses everywhere, and people come from all over the country to spend time on the greens. But the game of golf may be going through some trouble. Recent studies show golf lost five million players in the last decade.

MESA, Ariz. -

It's a story that's stirring up a lot of buzz in the valley. Could Apple be the mystery buyer of a vacant manufacturing plant in Mesa?

Let's take a look at the site. It's in Mesa at Signal Butte and Elliot. It's huge – 1.3 million square feet. That's as big as 43 football fields

A great space for Apple, but no indication so far that Apple has plans to move in.

Arizona was in the running for an Apple plant last year but lost out to Austin, Texas. Could the state's luck turn this year?

First Solar is selling its plant at the former GM Proving Grounds. It had plans to produce solar panels here, but never did. And Apple has said it would like to do more manufacturing in the U.S.

How about here? It's a tantalizing prospect for neighbors.

"Probably very exciting, seeing I just got laid off a month ago," says Deanne Wilson.

"They are going to be selling more homes, you know, people want to get closer to the jobs and that many jobs… I hope [it's true]," says Robert Lopez.

What do the major players have to say? Apple has been silent about its plans.

First solar spokesman Steve Krum's comment was short and sweet: "We will decline to comment."

At Mesa City Hall, Mayor Scott Smith was out of town, and his staff said they do not comment on speculation.

I emailed Governor Brewer's office requesting an interview about the Apple rumors and her spokesperson Andrew Wilder emailed me back: "Hi Steve. Thanks for reaching out. She won't speculate on rumors, which this is."

But wouldn't it be nice?
