Beverly Hills, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man suspected of sex-related offenses in New York City was arrested in Beverly Hills.

Menachem Tewel, 30, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. in the 9900 block of South Santa Monica Boulevard at the request of the New York Police Department, said Beverly Hills police Lt. Lincoln Hoshino.

Tewel had a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of two counts of criminal sexual acts and one count of sexual abuse, Hoshino said. He is awaiting extradition to New York, according to Hoshino, who referred questions about the case to New York police.

Tewel, who also goes by the name Mendel Tevel, is a rabbi and youth worker in Brooklyn, according to a report of the arrest in the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

He is accused of abusing four boys who were between the ages of six and 14 at the time the alleged crimes were committed, according to the Jewish Journal, which reports that all four are now adults.

Tewel was arrested at the JEM Community Center, which is at 9930 S. Santa Monica Blvd., the Jewish Journal reported.

From Hal Eisner:

On a hunch I went to YouTube. I put the name of Rabbi Mendel Tevel into the search box. Up came a video with a young bearded Rabbi making a pitch for donations to help another who was convicted to money laundering and bank fraud. Now, Rabbi Tevel made someone to do that for him.

Tevel, whose legal name is Menachem Tewel, came to LA from New York. He went to work at the JEM Jewish Community Center in Beverly Hills where his father-in-law is the director. That's the place where he was arrested Monday. He was arrested by Beverly Hills Police who were executing a warrant for New York Police. I called NYPD. They told me the warrant was issued in Brooklyn earlier in the month by a King County Judge. I called Beverly Hills PD. They told me Tevel was arrested without incident. The charges are sexual abuse and molestation according to BHPD. now, he will need to go back to New York to be prosecuted, but will he do that willingly or fight extradition? That's the big question right now.

Some of those I spoke with at the JEM Center are not buying the allegations. They say they know him. He's married. He's a good man. The watchdog group Jewish Community Watch has a completely opposite view of him. But, before he can be arraigned in a criminal court in New York he has to have an extradition hearing here.
