Not just about running anymore

NYC Marathon app and social media components

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

I was practically running through the Javits Center out of excitement, ready to get this marathon weekend started. After training for over a year, I couldn't wait to get my bib number.

In the olden days, spectators would have to rely on their best judgment and a trusty map to track runners in the New York City Marathon.

Now there's a tracking device on every bib. Download the ING New York City Marathon app and you can watch up to 10 runners every step of the way.

"I think it would be very helpful in working out where we are so they can come watch us," says runner Dominic Roche, who came all the way from Australia with some friends. They want to make sure their families see them run the 26.2-mile course.

Victor Comino said it makes his job as a spectator easier.

"Absolutely with all of those people going through, I would love to watch her through that because I don't think I will be able to get all the way down there," he says.

For runners, the app has everything you need to know about the expo, weather, and transportation options for getting to the starting line.

Race organizers say there's other new technology this year.

"For the first time ever we have two Jumbotrons on the course where we will have a social media feed running through of Instagrams and tweets from spectators and runners," says Rob Smy, the director of digital and social media for New York Road Runners.

You can upload statuses and pictures with hash tag "INGNYCM" and they could appear on the big screen.

Asics has this really cool feature called "support your marathoner." I'm running with a bunch of friends, so what you do is type in your friends name and record a message that will air on the Jumbotron when they run through the Asics mile.

Runners say the messages and real-life faces will carry them through the race.

So with all of this technology there's no excuses. Support the runners and watch me cross the finish line for real on Sunday.
