DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Tiane Brown was last seen in Wayne State's undergraduate library taking a midterm. Date from nearby cell towers confirm she made her last phone call there around 10 p.m. Investigators turned to the campus surveillance footage to aid in the investigation, but the library's camera were only rolling and not recording.

Therefore Brown's last hours on campus are not captured on camera.

Sources say this isn't the first time the library's surveillance has had problems.

STATEMENT FROM WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY:

Due to a technical malfunction, indoor cameras monitoring the entrance to the library were not operating. However, there are retired police officers monitoring the entire building while the library is open (24 hours during the week).  In addition, after 6 p.m., non-students entering the building must sign in and show a picture ID.  After 11 p.m., only currently enrolled students are allowed in the building. The library cameras are now operating. At the same time, all campus security cameras operated by Wayne State Police were fully operational and that footage is being analyzed by police.
We are confident that our campus is safe, and we review our safety protocols and preparedness on a regular basis to identify any areas of potential improvement. Tiane's death is a tragedy, and we are doing everything possible to help solve this case. We will share more information when it is available so long as it doesn't compromise the investigation, but it is irresponsible to either share information prematurely, or speculate publicly based on partial or limited information.
