ADOT auctions equipment, including 1979 fire truck

Looking for a pickup truck or a sedan? How about a backhoe?

The Arizona Department of Transportation auctioned off it's old equipment to the
public near 22nd Avenue and Buckeye.

"I'm looking for a couple of Chevy Impalas or Ford Taurus," said Paul Tara.

Tara's been going to these auctions for a decade.

He bought a Ford F-150 a few years ago, with 59,000 miles on it.

"I picked it up for $2,100 cash. I'm still driving it, love it," said Tara.

But the trucks and cars auctioned off Saturday had more than 100,000 miles on them, some had 200,000.

"I just bought a Dodge and three Fords," said Marvin Rigsby. "$2,400 a piece for them."

Rigsby bid for three companies.

"We get a year's use out of it, we're ahead," said Rigsby.

One of the more unique items at the auction is the 1979 fire truck from the Grand Canyon Airport.

It has 18,000 miles on it, but the catch is-it doesn't run.

Whoever bought it had to figure out how to get it out of there.

"I have a friend that has a tow company who quoted me a price of $275 to tow it 20 miles," said Kyle Sad.

Sad planned to buy the truck for his nephew, but it sold for $2,000, just outside his price range.

Tara also left empty handed, but he'll be back.

ADOT is hoping to make around $500,000 off the auction; the money will be used to buy new equipment.

If you missed out on Saturday's auction, ADOT plans to have another one this spring.
