NYC marathon day

Posted: Updated:
The runners were on their mark and ready to go for Sunday's New York City marathon.

Central Park was already busy with a lot of spectators, a lot of security and excitement.

Tens of thousands of runners are pounding the pavement for the 26.2 mile run through all 5 boroughs.

Marathon officials say security will be the tightest it's ever been.  The President and CEO of the NYRR says they are working with the NYPD with a really strong plan for security especially after the Boston marathon bombings.

This year's race will be treated as a potential terrorist target due to the terrorist attack that killed 3 people and injured 264 others in April. In addition to more officers, the NYPD has added more bomb sniffing dogs and more hidden cameras.. They will be monitoring the more than 1500 surveillance cameras placed along the route.

Many runners told us that the New York City marathon is much more than a race this year.  It's about showing the world that Americans can overcome anything.

“I was there for the Boston bombing” one runner said. “It was very tragic, I'm here running for Boston as well.”
