Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man in custody on a parole violation was accused today as the alleged killer of a 39-year-old woman who was fatally shot during a robbery as she worked as a clerk at a 99-cent store in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Eric Atkinson, 31, will be re-arrested on suspicion of murder, according to Los Angeles police Detective Lolita Deavila. According to Deavila, Atkinson lived within a quarter-mile from where
Martha Sanchez -- a married mother of five children ranging in age from 3 to 19 -- was gunned down Sept. 17 in the 7400 block of Broadway. She was working alone when she was killed about 8:50 p.m. that day.

Police plan to re-arrest Atkinson later today at the jail facility where he is being held, Deavila said. The case will be presented to the district attorney's office for possible filing of a murder charge, she said.

Atkinson had been in custody on a parole violation, Deavila said.

Video footage released at a news conference last month at the 77th Street Station -- a couple of blocks away from the crime scene -- shows the suspect from the rear. Detective Eric Crosson of the 77th Criminal Gang Homicide Unit said at the time the suspect was seen by several people about 30 minutes before the shooting.

The suspect shot Sanchez several times, even though she did not resist, police said. A customer called police after walking into the store and discovering Sanchez suffering from multiple wounds.
