The Center For Disease Control says one in every five people get the flu each season, which has only just begun (January & February are high months.) Doctor Shilpi Agarwal was here to help filter out fact and fiction about flu shots, and ways you can protect yourself from the flu.

  3. What are some medications to treat the flu?

4 ways to protect yourself from the flu: 

  1. Get the flu shot protecting yourself and those around you
  2. Take Vitamin C - 2 glasses of orange juice,  vitamin C tablets on table. Vitamin C helps our immune systems work effectively, fight off viruses, men recommended - 90 milligrams, women - 75 milligrams, 1 glass of orange juice has 40 grams of Vitamin C, the rest you can get through supplements and fruits
  3. Sleep - gel eye mask, get adequate amount of sleep, get 7-9 hours of sleep a night and strengthen your immune system
  4. Washing hands - hand sanitizer sanitize your work area, car, cell phone, the virus can live on these hard surfaces for up to 8 hours. Also, wash your hands warm water and soap for 20 seconds.

Who should get the flu shot?

It's recommended for all ages over 6 months to get a flu shot. There are 2 different kinds of shots - traditional shot in the arm - best for pregnancy women, kids under 2, people with chronic illnesses and a nasal flu mist great option for kids because there is no needle involved.

Common side effects sore muscles, cough, sore throat, fever but go away after 6-12 hours.
