A man described by police as a sexual predator is in custody accused of raping men he would meet in bars.

Montgomery County police say Joey Poindexter would cruise places where beer pong was being played and prey on young men.

Investigators suspect he has been at this for at least ten years with multiple victims nationwide.

Detectives got a break in the case in early October when a young man came forward to say Poindexter plied him with drinks at a College Park bar before taking him to his Gaithersburg home where he was sexually assaulted.

When police searched Poindexter’s phone, they found pictures of at least ten young men in various states of unconsciousness.

Some have been identified and others have not.

Poindexter loved to play beer pong and at Looney’s Pub in College Park the night of October 2nd a game was underway.

That is where the victim told police Poindexter and he began a conversation, exchanged phone numbers and Facebook pages while drinking beer and shots.

According to a court affidavit, the victim tells police Poindexter bought him a Long Island Iced Tea and he doesn't remember anything after that.

The next morning, the young man says he woke up in a house where Poindexter lived on Plum Creek Drive in Gaithersburg.

He had some memory of a sexual assault, and after Poindexter drove him home, he went to the police.

"Our current investigation has identified two additional victims at this point and possibly a third,” said Assistant Chief Russell Hamill at a Tuesday morning news conference. “The victims say they are all heterosexual and have never had a sexual encounter with another man.”

What concerns police is evidence that suggests Poindexter has been doing this for at least ten years and not just in the Washington area.

"He has recently traveled to New Jersey, Las Vegas, Dallas, Virginia Beach and Salt Lake City, and we have notified the authorities in those jurisdictions of our findings," said Hamill.

The court affidavit says Poindexter confessed after the victim agreed to wear a wire during a meeting at a College Park Starbucks. Police had what they needed to make an arrest.

"To say it took tremendous courage for this young man to step forward and tell us what happened and to explain the events of that evening,” said Hamill, “is putting it lightly. It took a tremendous amount of courage for this young man to do this.”

Police say Poindexter also met his victims at Quincy’s Bar and Grille in Gaithersburg, but the manager said the establishment had not hosted beer pong in over two years and she did not recognize a picture of the suspect.

Investigators say they searched Poindexter’s phone and have found photos of six men they have not been able to identify.

The reason they think he has been at this for at least the last ten years is because a man came forward with a similar accusation at that time and then decided not to pursue the case.
