Tempers fly at Common Core forum

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The national debate about Common Core testing came to Ward Melville High School on Long Island for a civil but at times raucous meeting on Tuesday night.

New York State Education Commissioner John King found himself struggling to get a word in about the Common Core curriculum and testing in classrooms. The Common Core curriculum is a divisive issue not only in New York, but nationally, pitting parents and teachers against state education officials.

Those who packed the Ward Melville High School auditorium for the community forum made their stance on the subject clear.

Common Core testing was phased into schools in 45 states in 2012, including New York. The curriculum covers English and math from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Parents we talked to contend it is hurting, not helping, their children.

Another community forum at Common Core is scheduled for Wednesday night at Mineola High School in Garden City, Long Island, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
