2 DFCS workers in Paulding County abuse case fired

Posted: Updated:
PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -

Two employees from Georgia's Division of Family and Children Services involved in Eric Forbes' case have been fired.

Investigators said that Forbes, 12, died from battered child syndrome earlier on Oct. 11. His father, 32-year-old Shayaa Forbes, is charged with child cruelty and murder in the death.

Officials have confirmed to FOX 5 that Kristine Brooks was a supervisor in Eric Forbes' case and is no longer with the agency. Neta Bailey, a social services administrator, also is no longer employed.

In a 911 call, Shayaa Forbes initially claimed that Eric drowned inside their Paulding County home. Further investigation revealed Eric had been beaten, bitten and abused over a prolonged period of time, even though DFCS supposedly monitored his safety.

L. Chris Stewart, an attorney who represents Eric Forbes' mother, said he believes the DFCS dismissals reflect a bigger issue within that agency.

"We need to find out what happened because obviously from what happened today, there's been a constant array of failures there," Stewart said.

Eric's family and their attorney contend that DFCS missed numerous red flags, including Eric's teachers, who had reported abuse to the agency.

"We need to see exactly just how deep the failures go," said Stewart.

DFCS had no comment about the dismissals.

Stewart says his firm has requested Eric Forbes' file from DFCS to help them start preparing for any possible litigation.
