Man loses part of leg in explosion; 3 grenades found on New River property
PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have located three grenades on the Arizona property where a man lost part of a leg in an explosion last week.
Steven Scott Lane remained hospitalized Wednesday. Two witnesses said Lane was helping them move out of a rented home on the property outside Phoenix on Nov. 4th when he stepped on something that exploded.
Investigators say the site was supposed to be vacant.
Federal agents raided the property in the 1990s and found thousands of pounds of explosives. A munitions-maker lived there at the time. In 1999, a state cleanup task force declared the site safe.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the grenades appeared weathered and old, but it wasn't clear if they were left over from the cleanup. Authorities say Lane was injured by some kind of explosive device. An investigation is ongoing.
