Questions about waitress who claimed she was denied tip for being gay

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A waitress, and former Marine, claimed she was stiffed on a tip by someone who didn't approve that she is a lesbian but now there are questions about whether she made up the story.

Two weeks ago, Dayna Morales, who works at the Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J., says that a family of four that ran up a $93.55 bill declined to tip her and wrote the reason out on the bill: "IM (sic) Sorry But I cannot tip because I do not agree with with (sic) your lifestyle and how you live your life."

"Once I saw the receipt I was beyond hurt, offended, and I showed it right to my managers," Morales told Fox 5 News at the time. "I went home at the end of the night and just posted it to Facebook to vent, just friends and family like 'Hey I'm hurt, here's what happened, no big deal.' Within an hour it went viral."

But, now, a family has come forward with their own copy of the receipt and a credit card statement that shows they did leave a tip of almost 20% and says they did not leave any message for the waitress.

When confronted by a TV news crew, Morales could not explain why the family's receipt showed a tip.

At the time of the initial report, a restaurant manager said that they do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and that the family was "absolutely not" welcome back unless they apologized.

Despite giving Fox 5 News an interview when the incident was first reported, the manager kicked a news crew off of the property on Tuesday when it went to do a follow-up interview.  The restaurant did confirm that it has opened an investigation into the situation.

Morales would not respond to Fox 5 News requests for an interview on Tuesday but her father maintains she did nothing wrong.

"I always believe my daughter," Tony Morales told Fox 5's Lidia Curanaj.

Soon after the supposed incident went viral, thousands of dollars in donations for Dayna Morales began pouring in.  She told Fox 5 News that she was going to donate the money to the Wounded Warriors Project.  It's unclear how much money was donated and the status of those funds.
