A FOX 10 NEWS EXCLUSIVE

MESA, Ariz. -- There are new developments surrounding a Mesa man accused of plotting to kill his estranged wife and her new boyfriend.

"He is a good man.. unfortunately with life's stressors," said the suspect's soon-to-be ex-wife.  "It can push someone to get to a point where reality can be skewed and then certain things can seem okay, maybe like I have nothing else to live for, so why not?"

Her soon-to-be ex-husband, 34-year-old Carlos Hillan, is behind bars, accused of plotting to kill her.  He cried as he was booked into jail.

"We all make bad choices sometimes and their choices can be to a level that we never thought was comprehendible."

She says her husband was never violent.  So she never thought he would try and hurt her after they split.

Police say Hillan bought a machete, gas can, rope, and zip ties. Then he drove to her house in Mesa planning to kill her, her new boyfriend, then set the house on fire and then take his own life.

Hillan allegedly told a friend about his plan and that friend called the police.

Did the victim see warning signs with him?

"Looking back, yes and I wish that we could have gotten him some support that he needed," she said.

She also says Hillan distanced himself from family and friends and seemed restless and agitated.  She hopes he gets the help he needs.

"Just give a message of love and peace and not anger.. not to meet such a potentially horrific thing with more violence," she said.
