Fire fighters battling wildfire in Long Island's gold coast

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters are still working to battle a stubborn brush fire in a wooded area of Kings Point, although officials say it's now on the way to being 'very much contained.'

More than a dozen fire departments from the north and south shores are battling the blaze, which has scorched an area with a 3-acre radius. The fire is burning within a 100-acre preserve.

Firefighters say parts of the fire are burning 4 feet underground, making it difficult to extinguish. Trucks can't make it inside the preserve, so firefighters say it's a labor-intensive effort that involves shovels and pails of water.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro says the dry conditions have contributed to the recent rash of brush fires on Long Island and upstate.

"It doesn't look too suspicious," Uttaro says. "It will be investigated when we get people in there, but right now, it doesn't look suspicious."

Wildfires of this magnitude near the posh neighborhoods of the 'gold coast' in Long Island's north shore are relatively rare.

Health officials say six Long Island beaches that were closed for one day have reopened to bathing. The Nassau County beaches were closed Monday due to storm water runoff that could negatively impact bacterial levels. The beaches were: Laurel Hollow Beach, Morgan Beach, North Hempstead Beach Park, Sea Cliff Village Beach, Tappen Beach and Theodore Roosevelt Beach.
