Easy steps to winterize your home

Posted: Updated:

We've already seen first-hand evidence that winter is on its way—but is your house ready yet?  If the answer is no, FOX 5 I-Team reporter Dana Fowle's ways to stay warm and save you cash might be just what you need.

If you've got a room that won't stay warm, there's a reason.  It's probably leaking heat, and that'll cost you.  So how do you fix it?  Tony Powers, owner of Intown Ace Hardware in Decatur, says grab a lighter.

Powers says hold a lighter up around your doors and windows, and wherever the flame pulls is where you're losing energy.   He says homeowners lose lots of money under their doors, too, and it's important to seal them up.

Insulating drafty old windows can also help, and you can buy a package with step-by-step insulating instructions.  The film for your windows peels right off in the summer.

When it comes to your ceiling, switch the ceiling fan to a winter rotation—meaning clockwise, so that it pushes the heat back down into the room.

Powers said most people can winterize their home for about $100.
