JJ Abrams: All Around 'Cool Guy'

Posted: Updated:

What's so disarming about J.J. Abrams is how unaffected he is by his own success. For a moment you can almost forget he IS one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. I interviewed him several weeks ago about his new FOX series, "Almost Human," one of the most highly anticipated new shows in recent memory. He doesn't act like the mogul straight out of central casting. For one, he's quick to share the credit for all the success-- and Abrams is enormously successful. In fact, when I requested an interview with him, he was joined by his partner and the creator of the series, J.H. Wyman. And second, from my observation after spending the afternoon at the offices of his production company, Bad Robot, it appears as though his staff thrives in a creative and nurturing environment. They looked happy.

Abrams is a family man who doesn't like to spend long periods of time away from his home. But he will spend much of next year in Great Britain directing the next "Star Wars" film. In fact, he was packing to leave to Europe on a scouting trip the afternoon we met.

The writer/director/producer made me feel right at home as we settled in to chat about his latest projects. (Even taking the time to ask me where I grew up and which baseball team I rooted for).

And his projects are daunting in scope! This is a man who has three shows on the prime time schedule, the Star Trek franchise under his belt, and the biggest challenge of his professional life around the corner with the Star Wars legacy. Yet-- not even a hint of stress. It was fun to watch J.J. and J.H. exchange some good natured jostling during the interview.

I was also impressed to learn that Abrams runs an apprentice program at his company which gives creative young people a chance to blossom under his wing.

I asked Abrams the secret to his legendary multi tasking, and he told me it's because he surrounds himself with great people, and he has confidence in their ability.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
