SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -

Police say nearly two dozen people at Sandy Springs Middle School were treated for eye and throat irritations after they complained that their eyes were burning on Monday afternoon.

School officials said the eighth-grade students were in a career/connections class, which meets in a computer lab, when they complained about the irritations around 12:30 p.m.

EMS crews checked out 19 students and a teacher. According to Sandy Springs police spokesman Steve Rose, three students were taken to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital as a precaution.

Sandy Springs Fire officials determined the source of the student's eye irritation was calcium carbonate, which is also known as chalk dust, Rose said. Investigators are working to determine who brought the chalk dust into the class.

It is not known how the dust caused the problems, which were confined to one room, Rose said.

Classrooms in the same wing of the school were evacuated to the cafeteria as a precaution.
