I began my story tonight, "for those of you who were around back then…" I say that only because 50 years ago is a long time and any child would remember when their teacher told them that President Kennedy had been shot.
I was ten years old, living in Las Vegas at Charleston elementary School in Mrs. Musser's fifth grade class.
Since September of 1963 we had been practicing atomic bomb drills. Yup, the teacher actually would say "When you see the flash, I will say drop" then we would all drop under our desks while the flying glass from our blown out windows would fly over our heads!
That was the drill and it scared us all because the Russians and Cubans were threatening us with nuclear disintegration. It never occurred to us that the silly drill would not save our lives!
It was against that horrific backdrop that we received the news that our president had been assassinated. Heck, I didn't even know what assassinated meant, but I knew it wasn't good.
The air raid sirens that blared at noon every day only added to the fear. In the playground we were all crying and there was talk about World War Three ‘cause some communist had killed out president.
It was a dark day and we got to go home early. During the next few days I will share what came next.
