White Lake family's dog dies after alleged bat-beating from neighbor

UPDATE: White Lake Police Chief Ed Harris says he has assigned a detective to the case and a necropsy will be performed on the animal. The test results will be turned over to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for review. Harris adds he has received emails and calls from all over the country regarding this incident.

A White Lake family says their dog was beaten and killed with a bat by a neighbor after the dog jumped the fence, and went running to attack the neighbor's dog. The family says the two dogs have a history of acting aggressively towards each other.

"By the time I got out there the dog was laying on the ground. So at that point he should have just went in his house, but he didn't. He continued to beat my dog to within inches of his life," Linda Lorenzen tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley. Lorenzen continues, "I was crying and begging him 'Please stop!' because I could have walked over and pulled him away. But he wouldn't stop beating him so I'm not going to go over there and pull my dog away because this man's beating - he has a baseball bat, a metal baseball bat.

The family says they called police and were not happy with the response. Lorenzen says she felt the police were "annoyed" with the call.

White Lake Police aren't commenting on why they did not arrest the man, but they do say the man told police he started beating the dog, Duke, after the dog bit him. He also told police Oakland County Animal Control has responded to incidents involving Duke and the other dog before.

The family says this incident went too far and is calling for justice.

"The dog wasn't even attacking him at that point. If he did even snap at him, or bite him, whatever, knock him out and get away. But don't beat and beat and beat on the dog," Lorenzen says.

The case has been passed along to Oakland County Animal Control. The family says White Lake Police contacted them saying they will also continue the investigation.
