JFK50: The Zapruder Film

Posted: Updated:

My #JFK #ASSASSINATION Blog/November 19th: I never knew Abraham Zapruder. In fact, on this day a half century ago, he wasn't as widely known as he is today. If you were to ask me what was he doing on November 19, 1963? I couldn't tell you.... I haven't a clue. But, I know where he was on the 22nd about midday. He was along the motorcade route in Downtown Dallas waiting for President and Mrs. Kennedy to drive by. He even had his handy film camera ready to take a movie of the historic moment the Kennedy's and Governor and Mrs. Connolly drove by. What he filmed became part of our nation's history. The Zapruder film contains those hard-to-look-at frames of our President being killed.

As many of you know I like taking iPhone pictures and then making them better with apps that improve the color and other aspects of the image. So, why was it such a shocker to see the famous Zapruder film given some 21st Century post production?

A warning here. This video can be tough to watch. It's the 2013 version of the Zapruder film. The link: http://bit.ly/1bKC9Zs

Oh, I've seen film and stills from it, but by adding stability to the originally shaky film the entire moment has taken on a clarity like that I've never really seen.

The new and improved Zapruder film is making the rounds online. My friend Steve Weakley sent it my way yesterday. As I watched, I tried to imagine the reaction of someone born after 1963 compared to someone, like me, who remembers that day as if it were yesterday. Back then I was in Jr. High School – Benjamin Franklin Jr. High

Now, it seems just about every city has a JFK Jr. High, Middle School or High School.

In the newsroom this week one of our assignment editors Steve Herren wondered out loud what LA's JFK High might be doing on the anniversary. It was a great thought so I checked. Tomorrow, November 20th, they have a big JFK Tribute and Art Slam. Sounds interesting. When I was in school on November 20th 1963 it was an average fall day just a couple away from Abraham Zapruder and the world being changed forever. #jfk50
