Wilmington, DE -

Wilmington Police say a 44-year-old male trooper was shot late Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 4pm at the intersection of North Market Street & East 24th Street.

The 17-year veteran was taken to Christiana Hospital for a gunshot wound in the arm. Officials say the officer has non-life threatening injuries.

FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce spoke to a few witnesses at the scene. One woman said she heard the shots fired. Another woman was on her way to work when she says police told her she could not leave the area.

Delaware Governor Jack Markell says he went to hospital after he heard the news about the officer.

"We spent a good 15-20 minutes talking. He was in good spirits. He did not appear to be in excruciating pain. I just thank God that something that could have been a lot worse wasn't a lot worse, "Markell said.

City and State Police are still searching for the suspect in the four block radius where the shooting happened.

Police have not released a suspect description at this time.  They took a suspect into custody for questioning and retrieved two cars for investigation.

Officials are still investigating what led to the shooting.
