NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, D-N.Y., was assaulted and robbed in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, her office confirmed.

Meng, 38, was walking to her Washington apartment after having dinner with a friend when an attacker hit her in the back of the head and stole her handbag as she fell to the ground, according to a news release from the Queens Democrat's staff.

"While this was a frightening ordeal, I fortunately was not seriously injured," Meng said in the statement. "Obviously, things could have been much worse. I thank the U.S. Capitol Police and the District of Columbia Police for responding quickly and professionally."

She suffered a bruised chin and underwent a CAT scan, the news release said.

Meng said she didn't know if she was mugged by more than one person. She said police had recovered an old phone that was discarded from her purse and pulled fingerprints from it. She said she's never been mugged before.

"I have not -- you know, I'm from New York City and I have not been mugged like that," she said.

First elected to Congress in 2012, Meng -- who represents several neighborhoods including parts of Flushing, Forest Hills, Bayside, Elmhurst, Ridgewood -- returned to work Thursday.

A Delta Air Lines flight from La Guardia Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida, was diverted to Jacksonville because of a dispute between passengers over a reclining seat. Delta reportedly says the flight was diverted Monday night when a woman got into an argument with a passenger behind her when the woman was trying to recline her seat while the other passenger was trying to sleep on the tray table.

New York City subway riders are getting back service on the G train between Brooklyn and Queens. The return of service comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reopens a tunnel Tuesday that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The Greenpoint tunnel has been closed for five weeks for repairs. Shuttle buses were provided between G stops in Queens and Brooklyn during that time.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
